PAUSE @ ORCHARD

SUTD Term 5   |  4 weeks  |  Architecture Core Studio 2

Project #1

Instructor: Jackson Tan

The site is unique in the way that it stands in between the quiet neighbourhood on Emerald Hill and the busy commercial centre that is Orchard Road. My design aims to bridge that disparity between the public and the private, the extrovert and the introvert, the fast and the slow. It guides its visitors on a journey; a smooth transition from the hustle and bustle of the city. It promotes a slower lifestyle away from the rush and the anxiety of consumer culture while providing an ideal space for learning, gathering and exchanging of ideas.

This intervention sits low and humble in the midst of high-rises, flashing lights and extravagant shop windows which populate the walking street along Orchard Road. It pays respect to the hilly terrains of the site, highlighting the subtle traces of nature that still exist in the highly urbanised area. It encourages productivity and contemplation in the centre of consumerist culture. It is a space that celebrates the contradictory nature of human behavior.
